Ive had to do it a few times. I have a log chain in my truck which saved me once when it wouldn't start after I came out from hunting. I hunt in the muddle of nowhere but along came 2 guys who gave me a pull so i could pop start it. Saved me a long walk to the top of a hill for cell service.

I grew up checkin heifers in an old 3/4 Chevy that you didn't shut off unless it was on a side hill. Great truck once it started but it loved to let you git out in middle of nowhere and spit the bit. It had a big brush bumper and so it was used to bump every bull who wouldn't git out of the dern way.

Ah the memories!

On any give day on any road, what percentage of vehicles do you think have a standard transmission now? Is it a life skill if there is little to no need for it? How many of you posting have a standard transmission in a car or PU?

Very few. Maybe 5%. New cars , it now less than 2% available for sale. Even high end sports cars like Ferrari are automatic with manual shifting using paddle shifters.

Manuals are still in use in Europe and other places , but going away in the USA.

Plenty of manual transmissions on motorcycles still.

i have two vehicles with a standard. a little time and sweat can put in a new clutch. they all wear out. automatics break down. pricey to fix. standards rarely beak down and when they do you can repair it yourself. brakes last longer. big hills are safer. better on slick roads.

Know it well enough to have special feelings for the driver that stalled it out in first gear.

I have three manuals in the driveway (including the wife's car, she won't drive an automatic) and unfortunately one automatic. The auto is a 1 ton diesel that I got a really good deal on. Good truck except the tranny is junk. Why you would put an auto in a diesel work truck I have no idea. But next time it goes I'm going to stick a clutch in it.

Heck that’s the only way I could get to school. Didn’t have enough money for a battery. Always either parked on a hill or had a tow rope or made sure we had plenty of guys to push start.

My 70 Chevelle has a 4 speed Saginaw tranny with a Hurst shifter. When I put the car together in 2003, it had a 2 speed Powerglide. That wasn’t gonna work for me in a 70 Chevelle.
