Zim and I went fishing today. What a great day! The boat floats. The boat runs. The crappies were waiting for us. We went out for a few hours and picked up 27. We threw back two that were under 11 inches for a total of 25 to clean.

Awesome Patrice. I love catching and eating crappie too. Those look like nice ones. And you guys look soooooo happy!!

They have to be 10 inches to keep here, and we have a limit of 25. What's the regs out in your neck of the woods?

Thanks, Mississippiposse and Joco!

They make nice Zim and Patrice bait too, Broomchaser!

Definitely a nice day and great eating, ABeardedTrapper and Muskratwalt!

You are so welcome, Bob!

Thank you, Beaverpeeler!

Turtledale, you have great taste, buddy! And yes, we are! We had a general limit of 25 panfish each with no minimum size there. It can vary by lake though.

Thanks, Beartooth!

You got that right, Savell! Come on over!

Thanks, Beav! We saw some big trees down and a few barns and silos wrecked. Nothing at our place. It went nearby and hit some friends. How about you?

Too funny, Gunnleg!

Thanks, Corky! I think we just caught the beginning. Water was 56-60 degrees. Yours should start soon.

Jalstat, we're having too much fun!

Gary, these were really chunky. We've kept a lot smaller on other days. Hopefully some slabs show up soon for you!

Hey aix sponsa! We had success on both minnows and Berkley Gulp bait. They were nuts on bigger minnows!

Probably the finest eating that swims right there.

Down here Crappie is both singular and plural, and it's said Croppie.

Ha ha, Savell. We ARE young and spry...although Zim says age and treachery beats youth and exuberance any day! laugh Thanks for your kind thoughts.

We did, Paul! Now we have to decide if our first crappie meals this spring will be low carb or bad behavior! laugh

We'll get some suppers going, Skippy! We had a few steaks and also tuna steaks in the fridge we needed to eat up first. How is the bluegill fishing there right now? Nobody on nests here yet.

Thanks, Trapset!

You know it, MnMan! I live for your pictures!

Sounds like a plan, Finlander! Good luck!

Fillets here, Pete!

Thanks, Flipper! We sure did.

You're a sweetheart, Nessy! I figure I better look good in case I catch the world record and the press closes in! laugh

They are, Rusty!

Thanks, Warrior. Nice to get the Georgian translation - I have never encountered that spelling, but you obviously have great taste!

Thank you so much, Lugnut! I'll get on it soon!

Hope it's a great one, Gary!

You're welcome, Mac!

During the late 60’s a nuc plant was being built just outside our town of Midland MI and with the plant came “travelers”/“outsiders” skilled tradesmen and laborers from all over the country and they brought with them the “new” name “Crappie” which were very common in our local lakes. Good time's good eats too, starting back in late Feb a crew of us started going up to Canada 68 miles from home crappie fishing.Ended up with 12 trips all but two times we came home with our limits, gave a lot to some of the older friends who can't get out anymore, and brothers and more friends. We've ate a lot of crappies since late Feb till now,our last outing was Last Sun the 19th ice was just starting to show some honeycombing, still 38" to 40" of ice....

Thank you, Paul Harvey! (Seldom) laugh I hope your Calicos are biting over there across the pond!

So much fun, John!

Wow, thanks Trappingthomas! I'll try to do that.

Thank you, Kristen!

That sounds fantastic, Rick. The folks who own our walleye camp in Canada have a winter home on a smaller crappie lake up there. They talk about dinner plate sized crappies. I dream of them... Nice of you to share with some friends! That makes the whole thing better! grin

Looks like lots of fun !

Good photos . Happy smiles.

These little guys remind me of what the locals in FLA call Bream . I used to catch them a lot growing up. Prepared them myself along with nice sides of hush puppies . A perfect southern meal. I'm sure your supper was perfect !

During the late 60’s a nuc plant was being built just outside our town of Midland MI and with the plant came “travelers”/“outsiders” skilled tradesmen and laborers from all over the country and they brought with them the “new” name “Crappie” which were very common in our local lakes. The once forever name Calico Bass was changed to Crappie and remains today! Now you know the rest of the story! LOL

I didn't know this backstory.

Growing up it's just what my dad and family called them.

Always learning!

I dont know, Patrice , they might be ! All I knew them was by the local name. They sure were good.

I would take my nightcrawlers and my cane pole with red/white bobber , sit with the black folks along the canal edges , who all had the same cane pole setups. We would catch those little fish by the buckets. I made many friends sitting along those grassy banks .

I would only keep the biggest ones and carefully put back the small ones.

That simple kind of fishing was as much fun, if not more fun, than catching the big fish in the Atlantic with my Dad in his fishing boat.

No kidding, Sharon. You gotta love panfish!

Vinke, you hit that one right one the head. Our first time out every spring usually starts a repair list!

Lufkin! I do have a recipe for cedar planked panfish with a sour cream based sauce. I might just have to dig that one up for you! grin

That makes the whole thing better! grin

Most of the crappies we are catching in Canada are very nice sized 80 to 85% are 13.5" plus, out of hundreds......the smallest we've caught was 9.75",16.65" was the largest, this year 15 5" were the largest.

Now there are the dinner plate crappies I was dreaming of, Rick! I'm glad you're living it!

It was great, Bruce!
