I am always glad to have anything live at the feeder. I have more grackles then anything now. During the winter about the only thing around is English sparrows and fox squirrels. I have a few red wings and yellow heads here now too. It will not be long the gold finch will be here. They are all fun to watch.

For some reason I like the red wing black birds. They really like the cattails in the low spot that is left of the pond the dam has washed out on.

Golden finch are some of my favorites to watch and why I put out thistle.

Here the grackles try to take over the feeders, and they're gluttons, lol
I have a squirrel proof feeder that drops and closes the feed ports if a squirrel gets on it...I weight the drop "cage" to slow them down, but the small birds can still get to the ports....it works a little, this morning I watched a grackle sort of unweight itself so the cage didn't close all the way and close down and it was able to grab some seeds, lol, clever bugger....

four and twenty blackbirds - I know folks in Louisiana that used to kill them with a switch at night roosting in the canes

In our area, one pair per farm pond. I love listening to them while fishing. We never have an overabundance.

Around here, the red winged blackbirds nest in brush and cattails, on the edges of hayfields, close to water. They are super abundant in spots.

Love listening to the Red Wings call over the marsh on a early summers day while fishing.

When I worked years ago, the nature walking trail around the campus had to be closed ever summer because the red wing blackbirds would be nesting and attacking walkers along the trail, defending their nesting area. Even the hawk respected their territory.

None here, when I lived in central ON they were every where at the lake nesting in the cat tails.
Noisy and annoying.

I have a lot of woodpeckers hitting the feeders. That seems to keep many of the redwings away

I stopped feeding last winter. We have too many sharpshin and cooper hawks. My feeders are just a McDonalds for them. I use to have my feeders set up in the back yard so the wife could enjoy seeing the birds. Then she gets traumatized when the hawks swoop in and she sees that pillow feather puff in the air.
