I mix my cheap dry cat food with molasses and cherry jello or sardines in oil. Make it now and the cat food soaks it all up by season and works great. Jim

I have used dry cat and dog food no luck. Wet stuff too . I go back to cut skipjack or shad (free bait.) I start catching coons. But I wanted to find something that dont rot. Arkansas weather has alt of warm days in winter. have you considered grinding it and preserving

I also did really well one year with a cotton ball under the trigger and a shot of fish oil into the cotton ball to soak it up. You can do the same thing with a good coon lure on the cotton ball. Just need to give them a reason to stick their paw into the DP opening to grab the trigger. Jim

Marshmallows 4 me. Sometimes I put them in a ziploc bag with Koolaid powder.
I push one large marshmellow down onto trigger. No lure used. I set right on top of coon trails and heavily tracked areas.
I've tried dry cat food and fish food (dont stay dry very long). Gets mushy, moldy and sour and aggravating to clean out. I would never use any liquid baits such as honey and syrup in my DPs due to the mess it would make. It would get all over my other trapping gear and hands.
I dont run strictly a coon line. I knock the coons back when trapping coyotes, cats, and fox.

I have avoided fish because of the Opossums here. I will say though, if I know coon are walking past my usual bait, I add a fish trailing scent. My favorite bait recipe is 5lb cracked corn, 1 container strawberry lemonade powder mix, 1 jug of cheap maple syrup. I did a batch last week and added black licorice chopped finely in a food processor to compare with the original recipe. Caught 30 coon on that bait alone last year.

Using fish oil I never had one eat it though but if concerned your method would also work.

I use seafood based dry cat food, mini marshmallows and fish oil as a trailing scent. I put a couple of marshmallows under the trigger and on the ground at the DP for eye appeal. Sometimes I use an anise oil/petroleum jelly mixture up high to draw them in, especially if I want to conceal the trap or catch.

One of my friend's dad owns a fish house. I can get alot of used fish greese. Could a person use it like a lure? I would say so. Besides if you're getting it for free why not give it a shot?

Sets should be under their nose anyway. I make mine with stuff from dollar general. Cheap bag of cat food, molasses, cherry or strawberry jello mix, and couple cans of sardines in oil and mashed up fine. Dump it all into a big plastic jug with lid and shake it up every other day or so. The dry cat food absorbs everything. I start making mine about now. End up with a couple gallons of bait for under $10 in stuff. Bacon grease works well with this too. I've also added fish oil, mashed up mackerel, etc. I will use a good coon lure on lip of the DP or on the golf ball I use for cap. Jim

I have skipped bait all together with DP's... I just smear a little bit of lenons under the trigger with a push/pull trigger style DP and I havent found my catch number to decrease with this method over the cat food I used to use.

I put a glazed donut on outside of trap then fill trap with candy corns. I need to follow behind you on the trapline. Not to steal your fur, but to steal your bait. It should be a crime to use perfectly good donuts for bait. You are contributing to Climate Change, man!

I scrape the bacon grease out of the frying pan once its cool and mix it with Quaker oats you use for making oatmeal. I also add a gob of peanut butter and a smidge of syrup. I like to make the mix ratio so that it is heavy on the oats and does not stick so it can be easily cleaned out of the dps. I don't make it in large batches, but as I need it.
A little will go a long way and I think it helps to put a drop of Dobbins' Shellfish oil on the lip or somewhere nearby. Works really well for me.

I don't go into detail making too many baits as there are some great baits out there to be used made by smarter dudes than me. But at my last property i owned in Ohio a section of the creek on my property had an obscene amount of crawfish. Me and the kids would spend a good amount of time back there messing around with them and I took a gallon bucket and ground them up with a blender and used that in my dp's. Anywhere near the creek it worked very well. I tried it in an area far away from there on the edge of a cornfield and they all got walked by. My traps baited with sweet feed or Mark Junes Coon bait (don't know name) all got hit hard but the crawfish bypassed. In my infinite wisdom i am assuming that it worked well because that was where that food source was likely to be found so it made sense to find it there and want it. the bait also started to fail as soon as temps were freezing. It had a shelf life for dp's but was great for creek side pocket sets for the whole season. Just something different i tried about 5 years ago and it worked very well in certain locations.

This past fur season and on my ADC Jobs now, half of the time, I am using sheep's wool and a taste lure under the trigger. A taste lure on the lip and a k9 gland or a fish call or skunky call lure above the trap. Persimmon, sweet corn, Dhat's It, smoked fish, or sweet meat-type lures. Really excels in the warmer fall weather and in the summer when ants are everywhere. I still use taste paste baits on sheep's wool or simular bait scent holder under the trigger, I use a lot of banana supreme, No Moes or a fish/ meat paste, a taste lure on the lip and a k9 gland/ urine or fish call or even a good skunky call above. On my ADC jobs around people, I prefer sweet baits or lures so I do not worry about the cats, winter or summer. Although I am partial to my baits and lures, and the only ones I use, I do not believe the bait or lure is as important (as long as a critter will like it) as to how the set and bait/lure is presented. The presentation will increase the catch with DP traps and cage traps.

I started using sheep wool last year as a lure/bait holder and it seems to me my catch rate went up. I even used sheep's wool on it's own and caught coon in my DPs.

I’ve tried a number of things over the years. All worked to a certain degree. Mark Steck suggested I try wool under the triggers but I’ve done better with Jonesie’s recommendation of stiff fiberfill under the trigger. Much better, in fact. They still pull it out but I think the stiffer fiberfill snags the trigger more often.
I’ve also found using multiple small baits in the DPs makes quite a difference. We’re talking about a fingernail amount of a couple different wet baits. In my DPs I put a couple pieces of cat food on the fiberfill and smear in 2 different wet baits with a little bit of those baits or some sort of scent— just a drop or two out about 18 inches. With cages I do the same. Giving them a buffet of smells I know has improved my catch.
But it’s funny, in January I had cages 6 ft apart, in a barn. One trap took the coon. The other didn’t. Coon seem to know where they’re going and if you’re on that route, you’ll get them. I’m convinced air flow has a lot to do with it. When I set it up I could see tracks entering the barn but I wasn’t sure which side got the traffic. The catches showed me which side was preferred.
At some point, somebody is going to say this works if you’re a bait dealer. But I’ve got a couple baits that I keep handy so it’s not like I’m going to break the bank buying a lot of stuff. Banana Supreme works well below 32 degrees. I was getting catches on it below 12 degrees on bare ground, in the barn I mentioned above. To be honest, I don’t know which one of those odors got their attention. It could have been one or it could have been all. But I think giving animals (and people ) choices, creates more interest and a better chance they’ll like some smell enough to reach in.

if you get Inside that trap with a file and rough up that trigger sheep wool will be your best friend. Poly fill has no odor but sheep;s wool all by It's self will catch you some coon In a DP. Wool right off the sheep has a very strong smell.

To take this one step further, I worked with the restaurant industry most of my career. Business owners used to tell me the very best way to create business was to have more than one business in the area. An Applebee’s at the end of the road will pull customers. But put an Arby’s or a Chipotle near it and now you’ve created a destination more people will be attracted to. Coon are the same way. They’ll be attracted to a one odor location, but I think you’ll see more interest if there are multiple odors.

Probley 98% of DP trappers just push them into the ground, bait and walk away. All well and good. You'll catch the eazy ones. I set for the 20% that are hard to catch. The other 80% will be cought with them. Use your imagation(or how ever you spell it) Make the coon want to work for "IT" There are 100's of different of ways to set a DP. example: ever think of a floot set with a DP. We here in New Jersey have to think "out of the box" We have no foot hold traps to use.

No wet, sticky, or greasy bait in a DP - ever. Dry bait inside with some “Coon slobber” (my new bait / lure) around the lip and some “Dumpster Scent” coon call lure about waist high and about 10 feet upwind. Set the DP where the coon wants to find it.

I have good luck by filling the DP half full of bacon grease. It's water proof and the mice don't seem to clean it out and the coon just love It. Different strokes for different folks.

Think about this - why does anyone put so much food or bait in the DP trap? I read many comments about filling the trap. If the trap has a push trigger that can easily cause a misfire, a toe catch, or even a snout catch. What is your purpose - to fatten up a raccoon or catch it? I use only traps with a pull trigger and put in enough dry bait to just cover the trigger.
If using the wet, oily, and sticky baits it must be a miserable chore to clean out those traps after use.
Use dry bait only unless you want gummy and messy traps in warmer weather and then frozen not working traps in cold weather.

The bacon grease works for our I coon. Dry dog food gets wet when it rains and turns into a wet mess then It starts to mold. Mice will clean out DP with dog food in It. Non of these things happen when using bacon grease. Seems to me wet dog food will freeze up pretty fast In wet weather. But bacon grease just gets a bit stiff. But If It doesn't rain when your coon trapping then you should be OK. Clean up Is a snap I either use my pressure washer or the dish washer. The wife prefers that I use the pressure washer. But you can use what ever works for you and I will use what works for me.

I don’t schedule rain during my coon trapping time. A cap on top prevents all of those problems you mention. Mice don't take what they can’t get. Cleanup is nonexistent.

I only use maybe a lima bean size glob of paste bait or a capsize amount of taste lures on sheep's wool, polyfill, or a marshmallow under the trigger. I never clean out the traps, the paste baits or lures do not go bad and do not gum up the traps. A pair of needle-nose pliers will pull out the sheep's wool or polyfill if I need to at the end of the season. Many times with the sheep's wool I can just reset the trap and not re-lure or bait inside the trap. I always put more lure on the lip. Everyone has what they do, and if you are getting 30 to 50% catch rates on the traps set in 5 to 8 days and happy with that go for it. The important thing is to understand and know WHY you do it. not just doing it because of whatever. My mindset is, and this is only me, I want 60 to 80% catch rate on the traps I set in 5 to 8 days. ( I am not going for numbers but catch rates.) ( numbers will come if my rates are up) That is my coon circuit for my area. ( I don't always get it but that is what I want) I rather set 20 traps that catch at that rate, then set 40 that catch at 30%. I am a method based on a location trapper rather than, a production trapper. BOTH WORK AND ARE RIGHT DEPENDING ON THE TRAPPERS STYLE I believe I use good baits and lure that produce, and want to use the best products, but in my mind Location and presentation is more important than baits and lures. The right location and presentation can make an ok attractant look great. Bad location and presentation can make a great attractant look bad. This is a northeastern coon trappers mindset. If I lived in the midwest coon belts or VA where you have more coon than ticks I may do things differently. By the way, it should be against the law the amount of coon you boys have compared to here in the northeast, just ain't right.

Location Location if there aren't any coon your not going to catch them no matter what you use. When I'm fur trapping I won't set a DP unless It's right In a beat down coon trail. I just don't set traps to be setting traps. There will be a DP on both ends of the culvert and there will be a 160 set on both sides of the road about 15 yards from that DP up and down that trail. DPs aren't the magic bullet and you will have coon walk right by them no matter what you use for bait.

And what I love about my system Is I just load my jerky shooter with my bait and load up my DPs. No muss no fuss.

Early pre baiting get them into a location, thats eazy for me to set.

Newt you don't have to pre bait when you have a corn field on both sides of the road. Or a corn field on one side and some timber on the other side or a creek running along side a corn field.

I made up some of jabne’s catfood, molasses and jello mix last weekend. Put it out on sign and they cleaned up in one night. Good stuff

‘Just got some of ADC’s bait. It should work well for DPs around farm buildings.
Then I thought, what the heck, let’s see what I can do with what I’ve already got. So I mixed a couple ounces or molasses with about 3 cups of small piece kitten food in a gallon plastic bag. Poured in a box of cherry jello and let the kitten food soak it up. I did the same thing with Kaatz’ Smokin Aces. And a 3rd batch of persimmon oil and kitten food.
Last week I picked some places coon tracks showed there was activity. Holy Buckets, Batman, EVERYTHING got worked HARD within 2 days. I have no idea if this stuff will continue to work during season, but for pre-baiting to locate groups and travel ways, I think I’ve found a start.
Next I’ll try it with cracked corn as prebaiting could get expensive. Molasses is cheap but only has mild odor—to me. The Smokin Aces and persimmon oil have stronger odor but could be expensive. All pre-baits, but especially the cracked corn mix will be raked into soft soil. This is a Ron Jones method that keeps them coming back when they can smell it but not find it.

As I’ve previously posted (maybe on a different thread), our DNR doesn’t like prebaits that might attract and concentrate deer. The regs say no corn, grains or derivatives (flour) and no fruit or vegetables. This is restricted to the counties where chronic wasting disease has been found.
Okay, I tried the kitten food, Smokin aces / persimmon oil/ molasses and anise mixtures and found them to be mediocre when our season rolled around. Did better with calf starter with a couple drops on the DP rim of Moonshine or Smokin’ Aces. Banana Supreme held its odor and thus coon catching power much better.
In the past, I’ve used wool under the trigger but it got pulled out a lot. At the recommendation of Ron Jones, I used stiff fiberfill instead and I liked that better. A dollop of Banana Supreme on the fiberfill kept the mouse action to a minimum. Any left over after the season came out when I took out the fiberfill.
The locations I pre-baited, before having to pull the pre-baits, didn’t produce at all. A warden friend said distemper affects certain areas, mine included, leaving us with only very large coon. I think I got one small one all season. The vast majority were over 22 pounds. Of the last 10, I think the smallest was 4X. Apparently living in groups isn’t good when distemper is in town.
If you don’t live in an area of chronic wasting disease or DNR restrictions on prebaiting, or distemper in the flock, prebaiting does work. Murse/Wade Ryan proved that a couple years ago. He used liquid smoke and dog food. I’ve found liquid smoke oil is better than grocery store liquid smoke (in water) because it holds its odor much longer. All in all, the prebait mixtures would have done much better if A) we didn’t have to contend with distemper and B) there were no chronic wasting disease restrictions in place.

Bigfoot, Captain Crunch with a good sweet lure works too. The Wildlife Research Hard-Core is hard to beat for sweet lure. A few drops in the DP and a few above on a branch.

Hard to beat 'Floating (catfish) fish food' , but any dry (small pellet) dog or cat food, especially anything with salmon flavor, work extremely well. You can use wet canned pet food or fish products like king mackerel , works great, unless you're in freezing conditions. Horse feed with granulated molasses ? You bet ! Sweet ( kids) cereal isn't too bad and cheap enough from the Dollar stores and an 'off brand' or imitation. All of it works, we just need a better market ! I use tuna, and mix in some glycol.

I have caught coon on generic lucky charms, and generic brand fruit loops. I also fattened a lot of mice. I bought some of ADC's dp bait, and caught more! It really seems to work. I put the trap in the center of the trail, and I only fill to the trigger.

Fruit Loops and Wildlife Research "Hard Core" That Hard Core is one insanely strong sweet lure. One or two good drops inside and a few drops as high-up as you can get them for call effect. Or else I use salmon dry cat food and a good strong fish oil.
