1956 GMC. 3 speed tranny (4 actually, but one was granny low). I bought it in 1984 for $475. I painted it bright yellow, which looked great but got me in a lot of trouble. It was hard to get away with anything in such a distinctive vehicle!
I still have the truck, though it needs restored. A maybe someday project.

Like you TD, a 77F150 2WD with the 351M anchor under the hood.
[Linked Image]
Got us 140km back home after the oil pressure went. Just had to top up the rad a couple times…lol. I put a 351W after that. What a nice truck to work on, even with the big block you could sit inside the engine bay if you wanted. Tough too! Literally drove through a KFC drive through with only minor scratches, T boned an old LTD at about 35mph and bent the fender, hood and bumper….exchanged info and we both drove away…lol

Had a CJ-5 before I got my first truck 1979 C-10 three on the, tree bald tires, rust on the quarter panel but ran good. Loved the 8 ft bed.
Spent $750 on the truck and almost more than that the first year getting towed out of places where I shouldn't have gone....lol...slow learner.

Black 61 Chevy Shortbed 2wd six-banger, 3 on the tree, with red leather bucket seats out of some sports car. Truck bought in 1976 for $365.00. Did a lot of hunting/fishing/trapping out of that ol' girl.

1986 F150 XL 2wd Red , dual gas tanks , standard cab , 8 foot bed

fuel injected 302 with the 4 speed over drive transmission

it was a highway truck

got around 22mpg with twin tanks it carried a bit over 40 gallons
run that front tank dry then switch to the rear and you could go another 400 miles

make a run to the UP and back without stopping for gas.

had that 1994 to 2002

unfortunately like most trucks in WI the rust cancer got to it.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

My first truck is still my current truck. 04 Ranger, I’m not entirely sure but I think a 3.0 liter engine? Terrible in snow and ice ! But I have a lot of happy memories trapping with it!
We also have a 96 Chevy Cheyenne with bench seats and roll down windows. Easily my favorite.

I had my first 2wd ranger an 88 at 14 but let mom use it for trade in on an rx7 convertible at 15 and never legally drove that truck. the rx 7 sure was fun and a hit with the chick's. my 4x4s were suvs tell I was 19 then I got a 2wd 98 f150. it was a lemon and 2wd so I traded it for a 99 4x4 150 it was a good truck. but died when an old man puld out off a side street and hit me going down the hwy in my door. the impact sent me off the road and into a red oak at 55 or so. 3 months later I stopped at the tree and put my hand into the tree fingers extended and my hand went in up to my hand where the frame of my truck went through my bumper and into the tree so roughly 4" plusses of death into the oak tree my frame sunk. I was knocked out at initial impact when the guy hit me and other that concussion, not remembering a big part of 3 months, and a few other long reaching effects. head injury Leander and compound as you get more of them.

the best truck u ever had hands down was my 94 Toyota 4×4 sr5 . had 320 on it when I sold it. wish I still had it. I ran that thing hard for years and it held up.

My first truck was a 5 window '51 GMC that I pulled out of a farm field and bought for $150. The title the guy gave me was for what I think was a 2.5 ton flatbed, so I never really licensed it. Not too long after I bought it the starter went out and being flat broke most of the time I could not afford a new one, so I would park in places that would allow my girlfriend (Yes, now she is now referred to as Wonderful Wife) could get enough space, preferably downhill, so I could pop the clutch and get it running.

On a very memorable trip up north to visit (Impress) her parents, we took along our two dogs in the cab with us. They did serve a purpose by helping to shield us from the water coming up through the floorboards when we ran into a big storm. It was quite the trip...and she still stuck with me! Wish I still had the truck too!

Our next truck was a '76 Chevy 1/2 ton we bought in 1979...like a new vehicle! The only problem was we had no other vehicle at the time and had to walk to car lots to find one, but that is a whole other story....

Mine was a Chevy. Don't remember the year. I have never owned a car since. Often wondered how I ever got along without a truck prior to that?

As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.

1980 Chevy Luv. Bright red. Paid cash brand new.

Guys at the lot didn't want to wait on me , they took one look at a young redhead girl and figured I couldn't afford anything.

I rode the wave in airbrushing murals on cahs, bikes , vans, trucks ...was a fun time on the cahlot.

The expression on their faces were priceless as I pulled out my wad of cash and drove my new truck off that lot a short time later.

Hey Moosetrot: Did the title for that truck say the previous owners last name was F. Flintstone? Bet you got decent mileage out of those stone tires.

Getting up to enough speed to pop the clutch played heck on the soles of my bare feet but the floorboards were so shot I didn't have to leave the cab!

I always wanted to go to Canada and get a Mercury tailgate from a junkyard for my '68 Ford F-100. Most U.S. citizens have never heard of a Mercury pickup. It would have turned heads for sure here.

My first one was a 1969 GMC 1/2 ton with carpet and a special paint job.
It was one of the first trucks with carpet, I got laughed at a lot because it had carpet in it.
I bought it off the showroom floor. The color was red-orange, it was noticeable from a distance.
It had a 350 V8 engine in it.

Don’t remember the model year but it was an international with a very small straight six and top speed of 45.
Also had a 71 ford ranger for a work truck. Got that for $1 from the guy I worked with when he lost his license to DUI and couldn’t drive it. Sold it to me for a $1 with stipulation I take him to work daily and help him keep it running. We had all of our framing tools in that truck and both needed it. Spent a lot of time in junkyard looking for parts for that thing.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

77 F150 reg cab 2WD campers addition. I think the campers addition is just heavier suspension and dual tanks. Clapped out 351M which I replaced with a small block Windsor. Load er up to the top of the cab with green poplar and there was still room on the shocks.
Should never sold that thing.

1970 K5 blazer. Doors were so rusted out I had to put my school books in a backpack so they didn’t slide out. You could see the road thru the bottom of doors. Top came off from windshield all the way back. Piece of junk but I thought it was great. This was 1980.

My first truck was very nice. 2006 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0 V6 5 speed manual.

My grandpa had told me he would go in halfers with me on my first truck. I got my license in 2014 and started saving for my truck in 2012. I worked in the evenings at a local cabinet shop, put up fur for a local furbuyer, sold scrap metal, you name it.

Found the truck not far away on Craigslist. It only had 39,000 miles on it and was in great shape. A school teacher had it. I think we paid 7500 for it and I contributed over half.

This is when we brought it home. It was a great truck, wish I still had it

During 1983 I worked many hours on a friends farm for cash and they gave me a 1951 Chevy pickup that had been sitting for over a decade. I got it running and used it that fall on my trap line. Not an easy truck to drive, no power steering, stick shift etc. etc. I put an add in the paper and I sold it for $1,000 to a couple guys who bought it for their retired dad who had one of those when he was young. They really fixed it up nice and being the inheritors of their dad's mall investments they had the money do do so. Unfortunately he did not live very long after getting the truck, but was able to drive it a couple summers when he came back to WI from FL.
Next truck was an 1981 ford half ton with manual shift. Since then they have all had 4-wheel drive.

My Dad had a small construction business. He always had a pickup I could use.
I had my own cars but didn't get my own truck till years after I got moved out got married etc.

It was one of my Dads well used trucks. Not sure on the year, Late '70's early '80's chevy 1/2 ton, 250 6, 4 speed 2wd.
He basically gave it to me.
My kids called it the "Boomer" as you could step on the gas and accelerate then let off the gas and about 2-3 seconds later you'd get a backfire.

That was the only pickup that I have personally owned. I had a small business that had a pickup that I again could use when I wanted.

I have never found the desire to own a pickup. They are a poor choice for a daily driver. Did own a 3/4 ton extended chevy full sized van for a while. was much more useful than a pickup.

we have a minivan, can haul 2 x10 x 10 footers and full sheets of plywood INSIDE it. Most pickups can't even fit a full sized sheet of plywood in side the box nowadays.

I find that I can get by without a pickup just fine and I don't have to live with all the downsides of owning one.

I got a hand me down 2 door hard top Impala that was gorgeous so of course I could wait to yank that 400 small block and 400 turbo tranny and stuff them under the hood of a rust bucket 74 Cheyenne Super.
The thing would run and I soon found some painted white mag rims to complete the lipstick on a pig look.

First truck I ever drove was an old International cabover. had a 318 horse detroit with a 13 speed. Went literally all over this country in it. No AC and real sorry AM radio. Armstrong steering, wedge brakes and a sleeper bunk about 3 feet wide. Bunk level with the top of the dogbox. I was young and the old guys told me I was lucky. talked about keeping a piece of plywood behind their seats and a sleeping bag. Laying the plywood across the seats and the dog house.

First pickup was a 63 chevy 1/2 ton with a 4 speed and 292 straight 6. 2wd.

Had to barrow the cash from dad to take the split rims off and get new rims and tires, if I got in trouble he'd threaten to take them back lol

71 Ford f350. Got it around 77-78. No power steering and it bounced so bad you had to unroll your shirt back down every time you got out. It got about 8-10 mpg and I complained about gas back then even though it was around .50 a gallon.

My first truck was a 2-wheel drive Dodge. I don't Rember the year. But the options were either a AM radio or a rear bumper. Bing a fitter I could build my own rear bumper. So, I settled for the radio.

I bought a brand new F250 with the extended cab, heavy suspension and extended bed in 1998. It was fully loaded for the time. It had a 6 disc changer and an electronic compass, that was surprisingly useful. It was way to nice for what I used it for. A buddy of mine said I should take a hammer to the side of it, so I wouldn't feel bad when I inevitably tore it up.

I almost bought a brand new F350 dually instead. I was approved and started signing the papers and then started thinking about how my house at the time was $60,000.00 and the truck I was buying was over $58,000.00. I said I needed to sleep on it and abruptly walked out of the dealership. The poor salesman called and apologised for anything he did wrong for months. He really wanted that commission.

I currently have 2 old Rangers, one of which we only drive on the farm, because the frame is rusting out, a F250 diesel and a 28' box truck.

My second truck was an 82 Chevy stepside 2wd with a straight 6 and three on the tree. Nice looking truck, but pretty much worthless for any real use. It got stuck a lot. And a fat kid on a bicycle had more power.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I don't think I've ever seen one of those in that color before. Very cool.

1964 F-100, 2x4, standard tran/on the column. I paid $375 for it in 1976, and thought that was a pile of money for an old truck. Three years later I paid $725 for a 1973 F-100. Try getting a 6 year old 1/2 ton for those prices today.........even figuring inflation!

Glad this thread popped back up. Wanted to share a picture of my first truck, '62 Chevy stepside 4X4 with a 327 V-8, and the first buck I killed with a traditional muzzle loader back in 1973. The winch got me in and out of more trouble than I like to remember. Finally drove it in a raveen and wrecked it up pretty bad. I told a guy if he wanted to get it out he could have it for $300.

My first truck was a 1978 Chevy Scottsdale 4x4 in Hawaiian Blue. 350, 4 speed with 4:10 or 4:11 gears. Rally wheels and dual tanks (because you needed them as mileage was around 10 mpg). Cloth seats, but no AC. Dual exhaust running glass packs.

I was 18 and it was a ‘panty pealer’

67 Dodge that had the engine between the seats. Slant 6. Paid less than $300. Local community college took it for a semester and rebuilt the engine - I paid for parts. Drove that truck until it rusted so badly that I had to put my left foot over a rust hole to keep rainwater from entering through the floorboard. Upgraded to a 68 Dodge D100. Paid $50. Community college rebuilt it also. It had been a forest service truck and was geared very low. Screamed at 60 mph. Wish I still had it.
