Sherman said "that devil Forrest must be hunted down and killed if it costs ten thousand lives and bankrupts the federal treasury". Forrest and a relatively small group of men were fierce gorilla fighters.

Robert E. Lee would be my fave. A man of integrity. Highly respected on both sides. My Great, great grandfather was shot in the leg at Chicamauga (sp.). Had it not been for a row of corn he claims he could of drowned. After the battle as he lay in the corn field, a huge rain storm swept through. He claims he was able to lay his head on the row, avoided the water, until he was moved to the rear. He lived to age 95 and died in 1931. My grandfather lived with him until age 11. He remembers that bullet wound in his leg always oozed. Locally the heathens have removed most if not all Confederate Memorials.

My dad (born 1910) remembers a few civil war vets in the 4th of July parades in St. Helens, Oregon. Oregon had vets from both the south and north. He said they always were at the head of the parade and rode in cars. Every year fewer until there were none. None of my kinfolk were involved as we immigrated in after the war mostly.

Forrest camped here near my home while laying seige to Paducah. Slapped the yanks around at Ft. Anderson and stole their horses, Lol. Western Ky was confederate, the east was union....Have several confederate ancestors that mustered out of Hopkinsville, and fought for the army of Tennessee. Besides family, a local Jack Hinson was my favorite confederate....The book "One man war" details him sniping union soldiers. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/05/full-47568-258502-1000002803.jpg)

Been doing some genealogy lately and dared dig into mama's daddy's side. Kind afraid that I'd find a yank there as they were mountain folk from North Alabama and East Tennessee and there were copperheads in the mountains.
Pleased to say I ain't found a bluebelly yet. Though the copperhead may still be true as I found home guard and state militia not CSA. At least they stood up for Alabama.
Her mama's people were ANV.
Now the American Revolution that took some digging as I knew granny was in the DAR but for the life of me I couldn't think of how as we were Carolina tories in that fight. Turns out on her mother's side we go back to a Brigadier General in the South Carolina militia. He lost three sons that were captured and executed by Bloody Tarleton. Do you have his name? I ran 40 some Revolutionary War generals through a few weeks ago and all but two were cousins and on those two, there was no data. They were mostly second through fifth cousins of mine many times removed. Most of the high ranking European military and royalty married kids off to each other for a great many generations and our high ranking military, is almost all entirely descended from them. The weirdest thing is that many of the sons and grandsons of the top European military became Quaker pacifists. The pacifists' offspring took up arms, when necessary and fought in the French and Indian and Revolutionary War. I had 12 Quaker and 1 Amish many great grandfathers, who were disowned by their religions, for fighting in the battles of New Garden and Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina. Keith

The Confederate Army had loads of good men that I'd love to have a beer with, but their leaders' motives were quite clearly wrong. As a matter of fact, as an infantryman myself, I'd bet that I could sit around a fire with a huge majority of infantrymen of any army of the last couple hundred years and we would all fit right in together. Real warriors are all pretty similar folks, at least in my experience. The north fought to keep the country as the founding fathers intended, and thank god they succeeded. Now, the far north backwoods are pretty similar to the southern rednecks when it comes to political beliefs; I think it's more closely aligned to rural vs urban instead of north vs south. Here's what my personal opinion boils down to: the motive behind the Confederacy was shameful, and North America is a better place due to the outcome of this war. However, any man of war, who lives with integrity and stands up for what they believe in, is a man among men to me. Just because you happened to be an enlisted man on the wrong side of the war doesn't make you any less of a man to me.
P.S. - renaming Army bases to erase Confederate names is embarrassing and dishonorable

I know there's a lot of folks that disagree with me, but that's what's great about this country. I care less about your opinion, and more about the fact that you're able to express it without fear of retribution. That's what the American fighting man is really fighting for. Regardless of opinions about the civil war, I'd wager that we could split a 30 pack around a fire out back and be best friends at the end of the night (as long as your Texas speak comes out close to english).

So far every single Confederate has been traceably related to me. Relationship to Col James Moore lll The husband of my 15th cousin once removed ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/05/full-11798-258514-screenshot_20250522_001025.png) I will admit, sorry Savell, Grants my cousin too. When the Confederate men came together to fight for their way of life, it was family coming together to fight as they always have. Keith

Brigadier General James Williams KIA at King's Mountain. My great grandmother was a Williams. Relationship to James Williams The husband of my 8th cousin eight times removed ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/05/full-11798-258512-screenshot_20250522_000251.png) Keith One of my sources has him born in Virginia. The Edgefield District produced many of my kinfolk. The revolution in Georgia/SC/NC was as much civil war between neighbors as it was revolution. It's why my bunch headed to Spanish West Florida.

let's see the south were all Democrats right. You claim that people would still be trapping if you won. Then ask if we are fighting for transgender surgery? Those seem to be Democrats hot items at this time. It took the first Republican president to straighten out you guys last mess. Now we got another one trying to fix this mess. I hope you don't take up those battles maybe you'll still be able to tell the deference between a man and a woman. You know good & well that the ideology of democrats and republicans have completely swapped platforms over the last few decades. Try again!

Yes, they were democrats but not the liberal ones of today. They were ultra conservative. If anything seccession was over 10th amendment issues and Jim Crow was definitely as well and for preservation of the social status quo. Matter of fact the still extant sodomy laws are in the southern states. The party switch came about as the national dims went left and the rinos developed a conservative Goldwater wing.

… amazing these things have to be explained lol I'd have to call B.S. on that. Democrats have always been the party of Slavery, today Slavery is just economic subversion. And building infrastructure for the country is not pouring money into big corporations. It makes a nation more able to move goods and people around, making things cheaper and more available, allowing all people to live a better life. And yes, corporations make money, but have you never heard the old adage that a rising tide raises ALL boats?

I remember reading about John mosby nicknamed “ the rebel raider” before I even knew about the civil war… I think I was in the 4th grade at the time. My 5 grade year I was introduced to the civil war by our history teacher.. and it was an in depth lesson.. even showed the battle formations of several engagements,, of course Gettysburg, was the major one…Antietam, battle of the wilderness, Fredericksburg were the ones I remember most. Our teacher didn’t go with the good guy, bad guy mantra.. he was responsible for my interest in the civil war.
Stand by your principles, Stand by your guns, and victory complete and permanent is sure at last. Abraham Lincoln
