I’ve done both meat mincemeat and like it but our family has made green tomato mincemeat sine I can remember. We love it. The ground green tomatoes are blanched twice with boiling water then mixed with chopped apples, raisins and spices and cooked for while. Then canned in quart jars. Good stuff.
I’ve done mincemeat with deer and elk and it’s good but I prefer the green tomato mincemeat.

My grandmother used to make a small mice pie for Pop every Christmas, I always had a piece with him, everyone else hated it. I didn't mind the small piece i had with Pop though.

My mother made mincemeat pies for the holidays when I was a kid. They were good. She used minced venison, raisons, nuts and other fruit I think. I don't really know what all went into them. I remember it being very rich and flavorful - so a small piece was satisfying. I'm interested in seeing recipes.

Here is my grandmother's green tomato recipe. It can be used in pies, cookies or turnovers. Sometimes I'll do kind of a turnover or hand pie, a couple disks of pie crust with mincemeat in the middle. I like to take them with me on the trapline along with my PBJs. Homemade bread and jam of course.
GREEN TOMATO MINCEMEAT Grandma Reynolds
Chop, drain and scald twice, one peck of green tomatoes. (Approximately 8-10 lbs) Add: 2 lb. chopped raisins 6 cups chopped apples 1 cup suet 2 Tbsp. salt 5 lb. white sugar
Cook until tender and when cool, add; 1 cup cider vinegar 2 Tbsp. cloves 2 Tbsp. allspice 2 Tbsp. cinnamon 1 Tbsp. nutmeg 6-8 tablespoons lemon juice depending on taste Pack in hot sterilized jars and water bath for time appropriate to your elevation.

I like mincemeat made with wild game just fine but we prefer to use the trims (the good stuff not the dog food or coyote bait trims) for canned meat. We always have tons of tomatoes left at the end of the season and mincemeat is a good way to use them up. Our family loves it, none more than me. But then we grew up with it and one pie doesn't last long at all at one of our gatherings.
My grandmother was a new bride raising a family during the depression. Granddad was a dairy farmer and like a lot of folks in the north country of New York in the depression, they were better off than a lot of folks. They had milk, produce, eggs and fur (usually muskrats and skunk) to generate a little cash or barter and raised a huge garden. While folks in the metropolitan areas stood in bread lines, folks in the north country survived and were able to help out each other, as we should during hard times. I'm not saying they had it easy, but they were in better shape to ride it out than the previously affluent of the cities.
She said the recipe came about before the depression as a way to use up plentiful green tomatoes and have a ready to go dessert for suppers. Just needed a pie crust and a quart jar of mincemeat and they had a dessert. Meat was a premium and while they raised a beef every year, they preferred to can most of it as they didn't have dependable refrigeration. An ice box but no freezer. I'm sure rural folks all across the country have similar stories shared by their grand or great grand parents.

Love a good mincemeat pie. People can't seem to get past the idea of meat in a dessert pie but I was raised on them. Very good. My sister and my mom, years ago made it to sell to others. The following is the an excerpt from my cookbook. You can use any ground game or beef. You'll likely want to down size the recipe for smaller batches, but like I said they made it sell too... …. Ought to be a law against that

My Gram use to make that. I could never bring myself to try it, just doesn't seem right.

My Gram use to make that. I could never bring myself to try it, just doesn't seem right. That's what I meant, it's the idea of it. If you can get past that and give it a chance it's pretty good. Most people make up their mind they ain't gonna like it before they ever give it try.
