Dealers won't sell many at that price. Might have to look into duke 330 mag. Or just wait. That price is crazy stupid.

Bill Duke just took a good product and copied it...after the patent ran out.
Made that product overseas and shipped it back here to sell for a lower price.
Duke 330s (the Belisle design) is selling for what Belisles were about 18 to 24 months ago. That price difference has got my attention now.

You will do fine with your chinese crappy traps for your crappy southern fur, lol. No more belisles LDLs or sauvageaus for you unless you pay the Don his take.

The jaws on the 330 Belisles bend and have to straightened occasionally.....so the quality is very close to being the same. Spring strength is incredible on the Dukes and now they have those clip safeties....
What's not to love?

Not anti Duke just helping the Canadian with his saying. Duke, Victor, Belisle, can all make a beaver dead. Personally I would much rather snare my beaver. G.

Wait a minute…….is this at all the dealers? Did they all run out of old stock at the same time or are they jacking the price on their old stuff. Dick move if they are. Sell the old stuff at the same price or find a different dealer……

Shakey, I looked at 5 major sites and they all raised their rates about the same. Monkey see monkey do. And some price gouging going on for sure. Best bet is to go see the little guy that hasn't replenished stock yet and see if he still has the old prices. I did find one that hadn't raised prices, but he isn't well known.

Marty at Canadian Coyote was selling the Nelson setters at the old price while he had his old stock. He did give everyone a heads up that once he orders new ones, the price will go up. That there is a good fella.
I guess the only USA BG you got to choose from is the RBG? I’d suggest to support your country and buy USA, but too many trappers are cheap and buy junk, then come on here to ask why they got problems and what kind of mods they have to do to their stuff….. then Hammer shows how to turn a pile of junk into a quantity hunk of steel……..but not everyone has skills like the Hammer……lol
You guys down there might not have heard of him, but there’s a guy in the US that’ll make you a good trap, I think his nick name is Kendell Obermier but not sure if that’s his real name. Real tough to find, very rare USA made quality traps. I’ve got a dozen of his finer big stuff……. I’d rather buy 2 or 3 of his than getting a dozen of the other garbage out there.

I see MTP has a 1000' of 3/32 7X7 cable for $83. When demand shrinks, price should follow. You could wait and buy your Belisle's then SW.
That would be true in an actual free market economy. When you have the government intervening with things such as tariffs, supply and demand gets skewed. You can't expect manufacturers to sell things for less than it costs to produce them, can you? If demand drops enough, the likelier scenario in that case would be to just stop production as Sleepy Creek has done.
Regret is the one thing I just won't do ~~ Beth Dutton
Who wants to bet that when this tariff stuff gets settled or things change, the price will still only rise? That’s why if I see a deal, I usually buy it whether I need it or not. I’ve kicked myself for not scooping up the deal, but I’ve never been sorry that I’ve got too much ammo, traps, cable, ferrules……list goes on………lol

Don't think a beaver knows what trap they died in, Duke, Victor, they all work.
They all kill beaver (and otter), but up until Duke copied the Belisle design on jaws and spring latches I preferred Belisles.
There are few things more aggravating than the spring eyes going around the jaw corners, especially when an otter escapes because it did that. Or, fumbling with those floppy spring latches that you have to slide towards the jaws to get them to release on a cold day with the trap submerged...and they sometimes release when you don't want them to. And lastly, a fired trap with beaver or otter hair on the jaws where that body part pulled out because they dont close completely....it happens.
The Belisle design (and the new Duke) is not for the beaver...it's for me.
Thank God For Your Blessings! Taste Your Words Before You Spit Them Out!
It’ll be interesting(,,,,and kinda sad) to see how many of the Canadian trap manufacturers are still in business a few years down the road
Elbozo’s up!
Maybe Boco can keep them in business.
Lots of Canadian trappers to keep them in Buisness With lots of young trappers graduating every year and taking up the family lines. More Indiginous groups buying loads of traps to distribute to their members also. As for Myself,I am downsizing a lot of traps that I have that are obsolete. As far as marten traps those are mostly LDL with a few belisles same with the beaver traps.I have more than enough than I will ever need. I hope to put on some informal trapping instructions for young trappers on the rez who want to learn efficient and effective methods of taking marten beaver otter lynx and any other species that intrsts them. Get them out on all their currently mostly vacant traplines.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
A lot of other traps are imported and don’t seem to have increased in price this much. Could this be another Canadian company trying to price gouge because they can’t compete on a level playing field?
Well now that roughy 1 in 4 Canucks are 1st generation immigrants, and that number is continuing to rise yearly, it won’t be long Boco til you can try and train the real Indians to trap. Just a guess, but I’m thinking that won’t go over very well with the powers that be…
You can't expect manufacturers to sell things for less than it costs to produce them, can you?
trappers do that all the time...
Because the vast majority of trappers are hobby trappers. If a man was trying to support a family by fur trapping he would give up the idea after the first season due to having to sell pelts for less than it costs to produce them. Or else keep trapping and sign up for welfare to let the gov't support his family since he can't.

Probably tells them how lousy the USA is while he's at it too.
I doubt a bunch of natives and what few trappers ARE ALLOWED to trap in Canada is enough to keep belisle going since ONLY people with registered traplines can trap up there!
I like the holding power of a belisle but don't really like using them as they don't fit H stands worth a flip and can't cross stick them like you can other type 330's, i have a set that i have to do that with and it's not possible with a belisle.
As for springs flopping around and otter and beaver getting out, SW it sounds like you got some of those flimsy weak Sleep Creek junk 330's a long time ago. Those were the worst 330's ever invented.

Awesome! Same thing going on here up north, and I assume in other provinces. Some kids stick to it and keeps them out of the gangs. Some do the gang life and return to the bush life after they get out of jail. In Manitoba, trappers getting their certification is a problem, especially up north but that’s changing. And the COs know this. They’re not generally gonna ding a kid that’s all trained up with a mentor and just waiting on paperwork……..it’s a different life up there.

Those are two of the most very uneducated comments I’ve heard this morning, and I’ve got CNN on………it’s still early but that’ll be tough to beat……lol I honestly question if you even trap, or maybe just doable with a set every now and then……. I've never had an issue with Belisle breaking springs
I think the dukes are over powdered
I don’t have any Belisle’s, but the last few old school Duke Magnums I bought were sure overpowered. Bent the spring eyes setting two of em. Got a dozen Bridgers last spring to stock back up and was super happy with everything about them. Though I know Belisles are the Cadillac, just couldn’t justify it for my case. Happy trapping! ScottW
I’m not knocking the immigrants, just simply stating that in today’s world, assimilation is not overly common. I go up north to Canada a couple times a year and have done so for the past 35 years or so. It is shocking to see the cultural change that has occurred in many places up there. I’m simply saying that the influx from India and SE Asia are probably not going to keep our great shared tradition alive. No need to be but hurt. I admire your trapping skills Boco, they are much better than your diplomatic skills…. LOL
lol …. Yeah!…. Jtrap has only caught a couple nutria his entire life lol
Not sure who he/she is, but has difficulty making sets with Belisles, and the statement on something they know nothing about is a couple things I found strange coming from an experienced trapper. What keeps the site relevant is calling out and correcting BS with facts, otherwise it'll wind up like a FB group full of 200lb wolves and other BS stories.....lol

Now I'm taking heat for calling out bad information about trapping regulations in another country, and for wondering why a trapper is having difficulties setting up a B330?
The two statements had me kinda baffled coming from someone that you say has trapped for a while. Canadian regulations, and B330s with stands and sticks. I've never had these problems using all kinds of mish mashed stands........and sticks are sticks.......make it work. If someone prefers a different brand and they're used to them, whatever blows your hair back man.
Sounds like one or two are a bit butt hurt over my comments........except Jtrap. You know why? Jtrap probably doesn't give a rip and doesn't need to prove anything to anyone......lol. So if a newbie stated false info & mentioned issues using certain traps, it'd be OK if they were corrected, but an experienced trapper gets the pass for doing the same thing?
OK. Back to super expensive Belisles. If they're too much $$, just use what you got and stack fur.
Wind Blew, crap flew, out came the line crew https://youtube.com/@drtrapping www.trapper.ca
I stack fur with mostly Victor's. I like the way the old school safeties flop. Ioose so I can swing them on or off. Can't get use to those flat safeties that are stiff and don't spin freely. Have them on another brand of traps and took them off. And put on some of the kind I like. Sometimes it just what you're use to and comfortable with. As long as folks are trapping and doing their thing. THAT'S WHAT MATTERS! I stabilize 330's like jtrap and can see what he means with the sticks.
Back to prices lol Shakey.
Im good with it. Prices have been rising my whole life. Probably have more 330's than I could ever use anyways. Bought a stack of used victor 330's i like from a guy that sold them cheap and switched to belisles during the first craze of them.
NYSTA, NTA, FTA, life member Erie county trappers assn.,life member Catt.county trappers
I can't figure out why people have to keep buying new traps, if the old new ones were so good? I haven't bought a new trap in probably 20 years. Half my traps I bought before that were used.
More native(and non native) trappers certainly would be good thing
But the numbers wouldn’t be even close to making up for being shut out(priced out) of the US market,,,
If that’s what is actually being discussed here,,,,
I think you need to check some statistics. Canada produces half the beaver taken anually in North America (WFMC). Canadians beaver trappers use bodygrips for the vast majority of their harvest compared to US trappers. Probably why the best bodygrip traps were developed and manufactured in Canada. Bodyfrip use is restricted or banned in many parts of the USA According to this thread it seems many US trappers prefer to use inferior traps if the price is less So even if belisle sauvageau and LDL were not sold at all in the USA there will still be a big enough market in Canada to keep them going just fine. Plus if the US tarrifs remain any company using Canadian steel will get a sub from the govt to protect jobs and the economy. If US wants to use protectionist policys for their economy we can too albeit in a different way..

So the real takeaway from all this is that Jtrap needs to learn to shove sticks in the mud next to his traps. Will someone down there please swing by and help the guy out?
I always figured that it is not worth saving 10 bucks on a trap if I lose a 400$ wolverine
I just use my stronger 330's ( Some makes are kind of old and still strong) for wolverine and otter and my weaker models for beaver in drowning situations. Many times those beaver need to get (flop a little) to water to prevent other scavengers from getting them. I don't know what the cost is for broken fingers?

Same holds true with wolf. Lots of new comers opting for an inferior trap as it's cheaper and they can get more steel out. Then come out asking for reasons why they can't get any success.
How bout this..... I'm taking my grampas old sporterized Lee Enfield 303 on a $20000 sheep hunt next year. Guide says the average shot taken is + or - 400ish yards, and I can comfortably group 4" at 100yds with gramps old gun with no rifling left. If I connect, the animal can't tell the difference between and $8000 7PRC or gramps old $50 303 British. The $8000 gun is capable of delivering terminal performance accurately out to said ranges, but the British can kill too and way cheaper. Even a gut shot will kill it eventually right? It's not like it's a $100000 hunt. Stupid? Yes.....Ethical? No, but who cares? Dead is dead.

I will use Bélisle traps first. Got a great stockpile of 330s. Probably 3 dozen 330s I haven’t even opened yet. Last dozen I bought was about 2018. Paid $330 Canadian or $239.11 American. Hard to use the new ones because the old ones just need a trigger wire replaced every so often.
Do they bend? Very few times. But when they’ll hold a muskrat by the tail I wouldn’t trade em
Saw the duke copy in Sioux falls at the 2024 FTA convention. Looks like a good trap but never set or used one. Use whatever you like!
Just bought 10 Bélisle traps at an auction 3-120s,1-220 and 6-280s all brand new after fees it worked out to $3.74 Canadian or $2.71 American a trap.I will keep buying them at that price. I guess I need to load up a bunch and sell them at the next convention I attend in the USA. I have no use for 280s
Just looked up 330s I can order to my house. For a dozen it’s $468 Canadian or$339.06 American dollars before tax. Prices have gone up since I looked quite a few years ago.
It’s like the Chevy, ford, dodge argument use what works best for you!

I was just enjoying the entertainment in this thread when I encountered a false statement. You DO NOT need a registered trapline in Canada. There are loads of places and many trappers in Canada without registered traplines. I suspect Saskatchewan Canada has less regulations than Alabama regarding trapping. Sure you have to take a couple hour course here once in your lifetime to be able to trap but daily regulations are less restrictive here I’d think.
I used to have a whole bunch of different brand body grippers. As my trapping skills increased I finally realized that the trap I never had to worry about was the Belisle 330. Got rid of all the rest. Have never looked back. Luckily, I likely have enough to last me from here on out.
Don't know why Jtrap or anybody else would have trouble stabilizing them. I use 3/8ths rebar and it fits just perfect.
I always figured that it is not worth saving 10 bucks on a trap if I lose a 400$ wolverine
I agree 100%. When I standardized my traps maybe 17-18 years ago, I already had a mishmash of various traps of several brands, both foothold and body grip. I did not, however have any Belisles. As such, I ordered a 330, a 280 and a 120. It was a no-brainer for me. I sold almost all my body grips and replaced them with Belisles, bought my wolverine traps from NO BS, (closed-jaw Canine Extremes), and my beaver footholds are TS-85s. I did keep a dozen or so 1-1/2 Victor footholds, as well as a few #1s, and never looked back. I junked all my old marten boxes and built new ones that fit Belisle 120s, and never had to wonder if the trap in hand fit the box on the pole. The B-330s were not $500 a dozen back then, but they were much more expensive than the other traps available. I was willing to cry once.

This threads been beaten to death…. High prices, traps are hard to set up, outfitters BSing, Canadian trapping regs, Shaky telling hunting fables, right on up to the venerable bubbaed Lee Enfields …….lol
Bottom line is the dealers jacked up the price on some equipment. Will it ever go down? Probably not. How do the prices look on the Belisle or Savage replacement parts? Are they up too, or just the traps?

Does Jtrap really trap though? Can someone who actually does be so ill informed on trapping in Canada that they think you cannot trap without a registered trapping trapline? Can a real trapper from Alabama, a place with a population of roughly 5 million with about 500 resident fur catching licenses sold annually really actually not know that a province in Canada of just 1 million would have about 4500 trappers licenses sold annually? Could a real trapper really be so arrogant and ignorant to post such nonsense without actually looking that up?
Coulda real trapper really think that trapping is difficult legally in Canada when they live in a place with body grip on ground restrictions and actually have to tag and report the catch of certain species to officials really think they have so much trapping freedom compared to places in Canada that have no body grip restrictions, limits on any species or tagging/reporting requirements?
Jtrap isn’t getting enough grief for his attempted burn on Boco that outed him as being about as knowledgeable on trapping in Canada as PETA.
rvsask, Gonna have to put it back at 'ya. Have you looked up/researched JTrap? If you do you might find him in at least a couple trapping DVDs....with Slim Pederson, Kyle Kaatz. Not too difficult to learn his name.
He is still employed by USDA as a trapper.
J is a good guy and has probably forgot more about trapping than most folks.
J, I cheering for 'ya..my friend!

Next thing ya know some cannuck is gonna come on here and say they won the war of 1812 or WW 2 or the civil war. When I was in Sask. most beaver I saw were shot and it was hundreds, they maybe couldn't get Beliles
Swampy got a crush on ole Jtrap? I think some down there should maybe come up here and I can line up a newbie to give you some tips on how to set a B330 with sticks or stands…..lol.
Most beaver were shot where RatM went to in Saskatchewan? Are you the type that hang up their steel for a gun when the coyotes fool you too? Firearms don’t even come close to the number of beaver taken with a BG……. The owner calls a trapper after people fail with firearms.
I’ve seen a lot of good DVDs, and a lot of really bad stuff. I’ve only been to a few western states in the last 8 years, but being on TV or a movie didn’t earn you any status in their minds. Not sure how it works in other states. Most of the best trappers I know aren’t on social media and are pretty tough to get a hold of.
So the dealers say they raised the price because of tariffs. Where does the steel come from for the other manufacturers? I didn’t see Germany on the tariff list, but a bunch of other countries are.

The trouble with beaver trappers in the south is that their skills are limited to open water trapping only.so they would be lost trapping under ice. Whereas Northern trappers have the skills in both open water and under ice as well as all the shoulder seasons,so have no problem operating in any environment.

You missed the point. Northerners have the skills to trap all over southerners only have the skills to trap in the south. Winter trapping is no harder than open water and if you have good equipment less work since you dont have to hump them out to the buggy in winter, theres big benefits to be able to drive the skidoo on hard water..

Boco, When I was on the NAFA WFSC, Minnesota was second only to Quebec in fur revenue produced. In a good coon market, Iowa generated more than either Ontario or Manitoba. There was a reason why Grony and NAFA depots are less than 80 miles apart in the US. Might have something to do with Fur Harvesters jumping on both the Winnipeg and Stoughton depots after NAFA went under too.

… your pot bellied butt would barely make it to the first set location… sweatin like an ol sow mammie at a Mississippi tent revival in August … then immediately get cotton mouth bit … cry … then tip over dead

Ontario produces one third of the north american marten harvest. USA produces way more coon coyote and opossums.

I believe a feller that can make a living trapping with cottonmouths, timber rattlers, aligators, mountain lions, black bears, mosquitoes, crackheads and maybe a mean ol farm bull,is a might tougher than a feller who can chop a hole in the ice and set a 330 with some sticks lol

In all fairness, the crackhead thing does indeed sound sketchy. I’ll take -45, deep snow over that possibility.
If you guys stop acting like teenage prom girls and read up.
As I've said for the past 2 months Canadian traps were going to and have gone up.
8 was educated again to the details. The tarriff is 50 percent on steel and steel products no matter country of origin That is 50 percent of wholesale. Doesn't matter if it's a a trap made in canada, china, korea etc Also steel trap parts.
Canada ha implemented reciprocal tariffs on US made steel products going north.

Its as plain as the nose on your face who the most productive trappers are when you peruse the available statistics. The USA has 10 times the population of Canada yet only manages to produce 4 times the amount of fur compared to Canada. If you were as good you would produce 10 times the amount of fur we do. So you be sucking the hind teat badly when it comes to trapping.

So are the Dukes going up too, or just the Canadian stuff? Canadas reciprocal tarrifs are why them slick trap setters were going up……..but only once the supply Marty had was gone, that’s a good fella. A dick move is jacking the prices like some US suppliers are doing with their old stock. Did they all run out at the same time? Go tell ‘em to fly a kite and keep their stock, and buy the cheap traps. Belisles are hard to figure out and for highly advanced trappers only anyways, right?…….lol
Wolf is one critter that you can put a lot of miles on and not stack up the numbers…….or hammer 14 within 2 square miles. It’s a different game.

I’d rather ride my snowmobile through the bush here all winter and catch 10 Marten, than drive through farmers cornfields in the South and catch 500 muddy Raccoons.
The quality and experience of trapping up here is worth way more than they’ll ever understand down there.
Yea,there was a good reason the Hudson Bay Company built all their fur trading forts all around Hudson and James bay and not around the gulf of Mexico, lol.

I could be wrong JP but I believe I once read Minnesotans have the extreme freedom of being able to catch a total of 5 fisher and marten combined per year over a period of a whopping 9 day season.

You do realize where most southern fur ends up don't you... They never enter the fur market... I would imagine those coyotes on Savell's tailgate, God rest his soul, end up about like these fellers on this movie clip....

Ya, must be putting all that time on the sled ice fishing. On Lake Winnipeg, go figure!

Who cares about wolves. There isn't any mystery to them. Only need an open season and time.
Darrell my understanding is that 330 Belisle were hard to find. I know MTP was out, I tried to buy some in May.
Bridger traps got hit with the tariff. As far as duke goes, I don't know. Maybe he hasn't imported any since the tariff was put into place.
So if they open a season, you guys are going to rid the landscape of them? If the land can support them, they’ll be around.
Looks like B330s are in stock at 45-48 bucks on a few sites……unless their sites aren’t updated. I’m guessing they were cheaper? Can still get them here for under $40CAD here so about $30 for high rolling rich Americans. Come up here and pick up a few boxes. Or is the smaller crossings into the US hard on you guys? They’ve always been pretty friendly to us, but when they find out I trap wolves near the border they get real happy. Most must be hunters.

JP if I had your seasons and limits it would be in the triple digits.
As it is I don't. Been known to catch a couple beaver through the ice and more muskrats than you can imagine in the winter. I've worn out more than one snowmobile trapping
I haven't fished Winnipeg in a decade. Athapap is my new white whale.

I just checked, I can get them here for $39 Canadian dollars if I were to buy a dozen, it would cost me $41 a piece Canadian to buy them in less than a dozen amounts. 29 American bucks a piece is the damage at that price.

You're funny SoyBoy!
A Georgia trapper posted 14 dozen used Belisle 330s on FB Marketplace last week for $225/dozen. He sold 4 dozen quickly. I got him to hold me 1 dozen.
No tears!!!

I read some parts of this mess where my good name was being tarnished and what's left of my fan club jumped out to my defense, lol. I think i can see where things got off the rails, tough for a southern man to communicate with them foreener's above the border who eat cardboard for breakfast.
I've never had these problems using all kinds of mish mashed stands........and sticks are sticks.......make it work.
A stick straight up on both sides of a 330 is what i think you are thinking about, im talking about when i need to make a X with the sticks, they won't fit in between those bent jaws as well, you can set on the outer hair trigger setting on the belisle and make it possible sometimes but the set i use that on id prefer a trap not on a hair trigger. Have same problem with the newer bridgers.
At any rate appears Trump and Canada came to an agreement so no tarriff's on anything going either way, win win for all of us and id imagine belisles will probably be a dime a dozen again here soon, lol.
I been busy actually TRAPPING so haven't had time to linger on here like you experts do all summer, lol
The only time I use the 2nd notch is in current, but it sure does tighten the space if you do. Every spot’s a bit different.
Thread was off to a good start, but nobody answered why the other BGs aren’t going up in price. Oh well. I searched around a bit for an answer and found nothing concrete (think it’s listed too……lol). In the end, I don’t think Canadian traps were ever super popular in the US among the average trapping community. Oh well, set what you got and carry on……but is summer and judging by the comments this thread has high entertainment value….lol
I’ve got a couple slices of cardboard on my plate from last night that I’ll have for a quick, light breakie…….then I’ll try and get some thawed skunks on the boards.

I didn’t read all 10-pages of the posts but the 50% applied by the US is now going to be countered by the Canadian govt 50%. That being said, since most of our plywood is from Canada and it will tank our housing industry. No home building puts a lot of construction jobs on the unemployment rolls, which translates into no republican votes in November. And THAT will make this a relatively short lived tariff.

Wasn't the Canadian tariffs already suspended? Or maybe he decided to impose a 205% tariff instead, like an hour ago? I can't keep up.

Not at all. I work in a cabinet shop and haven't used Canadian plywood in several years. Indonesia makes plywood even cheaper.... It will be so much better when the communist rule....
Being a field guide and not a booking guide, I usually had to let spend the first hour debriefing the client as to what lies the booking guide told them, then inform them of reality.
Man, i had an outfitter that I worked for use a booking agent for a few years. I know that of which you speak. Amazing what kind of smoke they'll blow up their nether regions to get their cut, when they'll never have to deal with them again.

Your numbers may be correct, and I realize parts of Manitoba, I believe Northwest Territories, and private ground in places in Canada you don't need a registered trapline. I freely admit to not knowing all the Canadian regs, but that underlined statement is pure BS. Being only allowed to use certified bodygrips in a certified manner and target species (even certified bodygrips are certified per target animal, just because it is certified for one animal doesn't mean you can use it for another) is no restrictions?
